Blue Ridge FFA members: Parker Otto, Grace Holtz, Nick Becker, Ellie Paulsrud Kaya Winstead, and Josie Dodge competed at the Section 16 Agronomy Career Development Event (CDE) at Parkland College. The team placed 2nd . Activities included completing a written test, judging placing classes of hay, corn, soybeans, and identifying crops, weeds, and insects.

Blue Ridge FFA members competed at the Section 16 Dairy Foods Career Development Event (CDE) on Wednesday, November 18 at Sangamon Valley High School. The team placed 10th overall. The team consisted of: Garrett Wendell, Ellie Paulsrud, Cassidy Burris, Kaya Winstead, Cassie Meier, Nick Becker, and Alicen Herald. Activities included identifying 10 types of cheeses, describing off-flavors in milks, judging milker head units, compare and contrasting real vs. artificial dairy products, and completing a written test. Freshman, Nick Becker said, “ Even though we didn’t place the best I look forward to going next year and doing better.”
Six Blue Ridge FFA members went to the 88th FFA National Convention in Louisville, KY on October 28-30, 2015. FFA members were able to meet members from all over America and Puerto Rico. While at convention, members heard from motivational speakers, such as Amberley Snyder, Dr. Rick Rigsby, and the 2014-15 National FFA Officer team. The Career Expo was a highlight of members, which they were allowed to interact with agricultural business and college representatives. Finally, the members were able to experience some of the local Louisville attractions like Churchill Downs and the Jack O’ Lantern Spectacular. The 89th Annual National FFA Convention will be in Indianapolis in 2016.
5 FFA members went to Bethany, IL to compete in the section land use contest. Members include: Parker Otto, Grace Holtz, Dustin Holoch, Michael McCarter, and Chase Zimmerman. Participant judged 5 soil pits and determined its texture, color, structure, and agricultural uses. With their efforts the team placed 9th overall with Grace Holtz leading the way for Blue Ridge team. “I enjoyed going to this contest and hope to attend more CDEs this year,” said Grace. Also Parker Otto added, “ I am glad with how our team turned out and I hope that we do even better next year.”
27 FFA members traveled to Decatur, IL to visit the Farm Progress Show. This show is the nation’s largest agricultural expo. Many of the leading agricultural businesses had the best items out for display with information to share their stories. Farmers, FFA members, and everyone in between were able to learn and experience first hand the latest technology that is soon to come out. Some members were attracted to the antique tractors that were on
display and working, while others enjoyed seeing miniature horses and cattle. Each member was able to interact with several vendors to learn more about their products, which lead to receiving giveaways.
